Epic Failure,  I'm embarrassed to even be typing this and pretty much feel like I've wasted the last 2.5 years of my life.  I might feel a little better after the deliria is gone but I'm in pretty bad shape at this time.

Here is the worst of it, I felt great at the start line, never had stomach issues, never had cramping, in fact at mile 15 I remember thinking to myself how great my legs felt and I could go forever.  Well I couldn't, as soon as the sun hit me I instantly fell apart, by mile 18 I couldn't even run in a straight line, or think straight.  I fell in to a vicious cycle of trying to stay hydrated and fueled and keeping it all down. Every time I drank or ate anything it was on the side of the road within 5 minutes.  To tell the truth I really don't even remember how I eventually got to the finish line, I would have got in the sag wagon at any minute but it never came so I just kept going.  Not even joking, this was probably the closest near death experience I have ever experienced, it really wasn't even safe for me to keep going.  Absolutely miserable ride home, my wife had to quickly pull off to the side of the road a number of time for me to throw up on the side of the road.

I hope this wasn't to over dramatic, maybe I should have waited a day to write something.

I may do real splits someday, but for now I'll put what I remember

5K - 17:55

10 Mile - 1:00:00 flat ( I was very happy about that one.)

1/2 way - 1:20:20 (On track, just need to negative split)

20 Mile - 2:03:?? (Still on track for a 2:40 but fading fast)

26.2 - 3:02:57 (almost 1 hour to go 6.2 miles)

I really do think I'm going to take a good long break, especially from the Marathon,  maybe 1/2's are more up my ally.

Sorry about the bad experience today, but take solace in the fact that you finished a tough race today.

It is just one race and there will be others, but I know the disappointment is tough right now. Hang tough and know that you can recover from this race.

Seriously it was like 70 at the start line! I can't believe you still pulled out a 3:02 with all the stomach issues. Really, it is just one race and you've shown that you are a great runner, don't be too down!!

From Steam8 on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 23:18:05 from 166.70.55.77

WOW...3:02 is no epic failure! That is an amazing time!!!

I am so sorry that you had such a bad race! The heat really got to everyone today. This would have been my nephew's 5 marathon and he pulled out at mile 21 with stomach cramps and dizziness.....he said it was the worst running experience ever. He said everyone was vomiting and the wagon was full. They told him that he really shouldn't keep going, he couldn't walk in a straight line. I hope you recover and are okay. That really must have been hard on your body.

Sorry about your bad race. Give it a few days, and I'm sure you will relax a bit and won't consider it a complete failure. Running in the heat, in particular, can really wreak stomach issues and mess up people's races.

I think we were running in parallel worlds...an hour apart.

I feel your pain, oh do I feel it! What happened today? Seriously? What was in the water?!?

The positive side is you were fit to PR... so you can look at it that way. The sun/heat can instantly do tricky things to the body. Maybe it was just a hydration issue. I wouldn't down the fitness but maybe just a bad heat day.

Rob it was rough, but you still did super awesome. Good to see you today! :)

Thanks everyone for the comments, I wasn't even going to post a race report for this one but I'm very glad I did now. This Blog is really great for making you feel better when your down.

I have no idea why I have such a problem with heat exhaustion, it's been a problem ever since I was a kid, I used to think it was just cause I was over weight.

I lost 12 lbs from the start of the race to the finish yesterday. Not real healthy!

Find the silver & count your blessings not your failures. No one loves you any less because you didn't reach your goal. I'd love to trade you times. Maybe some year.

Hang in there man! Sounds like conditions were tuff for this race and you didn't quit. Your past entries seem like you've been enjoyin running and staying fit, so try not to base everything you've done on this one race!

From Kelli on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 19:55:13 from 71.219.83.151

WOW, sorry. Puking is not fun.

I hope you are feeling better. Bummer about the race, but not epic failure, just a really bad day.

From Superfly on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 20:29:46 from 74.211.21.81

Dude! You had a day and a half. It's what us STG guys call "making some memories". So sorry it went so bad at the end. Running in the heat IS the worst culprit for having a bad race. Yesterday we had heat and a headwind during the last 10 miles. I knew things would get ugly with the way the temps have stayed high. Then Friday nights cloud cover just made it even worse. You ran up to mile 20 but by then the damage was already done. My race last year here at STG went almost just like yours. I was like a frog slowly cooking in water and by the time I was boiling it was way too late.

Anyways don't be hard on yourself. You'll run another race and you'll hit your goals. The hard part is we just can't control the conditions. I've ran STG 7 times and only 3 of the times were super for trying to PR. Every other race will be the same. Take a good rest, and recover from this one... then sign up for something else. I guess that's what we do.

When I ran in the Jr National championships for the 10K, it was at 11 pm, 99 degrees and 100% humidity. I had been training in the cool Utah weather all year only to step into a sauna to run the race of my life. It was so humid that you couldn’t see from one side of the track to the other. The stadium lights looked like a night club in the fog. I suffered heatstroke in the race, resulting in a horrible performance. I completely believe you when you say it was a near death experience. I know how it feels to have a race go south on you after putting in so much work. But I would rather have a race go to the dogs due to the circumstances than wuss out. There was nothing you could have done to make a better time, and that is very respectable.
