Well, I think I defined a new level of crazy (or stupid) today.  This is the sort of thing that happens when you give someone like me too much idle time.  All my long runs on the treadmill this last week made me think of lots of things,  “What’s for dinner” “When should I hang my Christmas lights?”  “I wonder if I could run a full marathon on the treadmill?”  “I wonder if I could run a marathon PR on the treadmill?”  You know, those kinds of questions.

Yesterday on my run I thought about running 26 miles on Thanksgiving morning just for fun, then I thought I should just do it tomorrow since I feel good now.  It has also haunted me that my marathon PR was 2:51:30 at Des News and that was after my (at the time) biggest mileage week as a “training run”.  I can run 6:30 pace pretty easy and always think I could just run 6:30 pace forever, so why don’t I even have a marathon time to back that up?  Basically because every time I run a Marathon setting a PR by a minute or 2 never interests me, I always go out too hard, blow up and end up feeling bad for myself for weeks after.

So anyway, all this made me devise a crazy plan for this morning, wake up early go to the gym and run a PR marathon.  Wow!  Who thinks like that, especially after running by far the furthest mileage week I've ever had (not quite 140 miles this week)?  Apparently me.  I couldn’t sleep very good last night, first sign this was the real deal, I woke up and 3:30 and decided to get on with it so I headed to the gym.  I wanted to make it as honest as possible, which meant when I hit the start button on my Garmin I couldn’t hit stop until I was done, I knew I would have 2 treadmill resets, one at mile 9 and one and mile 18 (to keep the splits easier to track) and wasn’t sure how much time this would cost me.  I decided to use those 2 resets as my only “aid stations”.  I also wore my HR monitor to keep me honest from doing something crazy like, (jumping off the treadmill for a rest while it still went).  So anyway, I felt that these measures would make it honest so I could feel good about it.

Started at 9.2 mph 6:31 pace then at mile 5 I bumped it to 9.3 to try and make up for the resets, did that again at mile 14.  The resets only ended up taking about 15 seconds so not to bad.  My HR went pretty high at first and I thought maybe I wasn’t going to make it, by the first reset though I was feeling pretty good and decided I would make it.  By the second reset I was actually feeling better and better the longer I went, my HR even was dipping down a few bpm too, not sure how I got feeling better after 20 miles.  So at mile 20 when I realized this was really going to happen I kept bumping up the speed every mile thinking I wish I could finish all marathons like this.  I really wanted to break 2:50 so I pushed pretty hard the final 2 miles.

In many ways this was the best marathon I’ve ever done, no bathroom lines, no long bus ride, no standing in the cold, and it started right on time.  Well, 4 minutes late for one last bathroom break.

Does it count as a real PR?  Who knows?  I say yes, but it’s my run and my blog so I can say whatever I want.

You are seriously CRAZY!!! Way to go on a new marathon PR!!!

From Jon on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:06:57 from 98.71.177.166

So were you hitting lap on your watch each mile (per the treadmill)?

I think it counts, though treadmills are notorious for being off, so it's definitely not certified. Plus, if you can run that fast on a treadmill, you could definitely do faster when tapered in a real race with competition to push you.

Nice job, though. Do you realize most people would see this as nuts?!?

From Rob on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:16:09 from 204.15.86.95

Yeah, I just hit the lap button every mile. This is the same treadmill I run on everyday, I think it seems pretty accurate compared to my road effort.

Yeah, even I think it's nuts.

From Tom on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:25:58 from 67.199.180.90

Wow! I saw the title of your race and had to see if you actually ran a marathon on the treadmill in that time. And you did! Congrats, that takes some serious mental fortitude to handle that long and that fast on the mill! I once ran 16 on the treadmill and swore I would NEVER EVER do it again. I'll be sure and use you for inspiration on those winter days when the roads are non-runnable and I have to do the long run inside! Good job!

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:33:49 from 76.27.122.13

Wack job!

From Walter on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:38:48 from 24.2.69.110

Rob, I really want to do a half marathon or full on treadmills. I think it would be fun. We could get actual course to treadmill to run Boston in Thanksgiving.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:47:56 from 76.27.122.13

Tom - mental fortitude? Try lack of brain cells.

I have nothing better to do than sit here all day and make fun of Rob

From Rob on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 12:55:56 from 204.15.86.95

Rob, my wife said you spelled "Whack" wrong :) You could try going to the gym!

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 14:28:08 from 76.27.122.13

Whack Job!!

From Marlin on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 14:58:47 from 75.174.15.108

Wow, nice run Rob - you are incredible!!!!

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 15:36:56 from 76.27.122.13

OK, I will admit that I am impressed. How many times did you cycle through "Sports Center" while you were running?

From Jon on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 15:51:02 from 98.71.177.166

I would have at least done it on a weekday, so you could watch Mike and Mike on ESPN2...

From Fritz on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 16:04:16 from 65.100.192.74

Wow! Did you run this at home or the gym? If at home I wonder how this will affect your power bill. Still far cheaper than paying for a race. :) I definitely think you can count this as a PR. At 0% incline I think treadmills are a little faster than a flat course but certainly not as fast as St. George or TOU.

From Rob on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 16:14:09 from 204.15.86.95

It was at the gym, Lifetime. They don't have individual TV's just a giant wall O' TV's. So I just listened to music really loud and watched the same weather forecast 7 times.

From Rachelle on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 18:52:24 from 66.7.127.115

Um you are a rockstar. Wow simply amazing! I have always thought about running a marathon on the treadmill because I swear on the life of me I could PR that way too.

I might just have to try it. Why not huh?

From Burt on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 22:26:02 from 174.255.241.22

You are absolutely bonkers.

From Seth on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 22:38:25 from 67.177.36.131

Wow, that is impressive! I say PR for sure. You need to go into your next marathon with that laid back mentality and you'll kill it. Nice work!

From allie on Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 00:19:00 from 24.10.191.18

blink. blink. HOLY COW.

From Bam on Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 06:34:43 from 86.40.3.113

You are seriously touched, lad.

Well done, that was amazing. I can't even stay on a treadmill for more than 5 mins.

Perhaps you should investigate if they have TM marathon races. I think you'd be up there with the best of them. Once again, well done.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 11:26:41 from 174.27.199.39

Did you count how many crazy looks you got from people at the gym?

Less than or equal to 2: probably not crazy

3 to 4: very likely crazy

greater than or equal to 5: (I'd have to agree with Murphy here) total whack job!!

Regardless, congrats on the PR! :)

From Rob on Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 11:35:34 from 204.15.86.95

:), Teena Marie. For the first hour I was the only person at the gym so I don't really think anyone knew. All these people are used to seeing the crazy guy on the front treadmill 3 from the right every morning, they stopped giving me crazy looks months ago.

From JulieC on Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 13:29:51 from 67.41.189.197

totally crazy..but nothing surprises me anymore with running. I ran a marathon for the heck of it in July up AF canyon and back..but sub 2:50 marathon on the TM takes the cake!! Longest I have run is a 20 miler on the TM : D if I were as crazy as I was in July I would be on that TM tomorrow shooting for my PR too due to your inspiration!! I LOVE IT!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Thanks for sharing!! btw did you add any incline to vary the terrain?

From Kam on Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 22:31:46 from 67.2.39.81

Nice. I've heard of some pretty dull courses, but this must be the winner. Do you have a count of how many people got on and off next to you during your marathon?

From Bec on Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 11:48:50 from 68.206.133.141

This is just AMAZING!!! What kind of looks were you getting at the gym, if any? Did you get off the TM and think, "I just ran a marathon on the TM and no one here even knows it!"

I am impressed. I have ran 22 miles on the Olympic Oval and a half on TM. Don't know if I could do a full... Now I want to. It would have been nice to have ran next to someone.

From Rob on Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 12:07:03 from 204.15.86.95

Walter - I'm in, sign me up. Do you need pacers :)

Rob - I wasn't offended by you calling me a braincell deficient whack job. I knew you were impressed.

Rachelle - Thanks, my ears were ringing like a Rockstar from listening to loud music for almost 3 hours.

Burt- Thanks, that means a lot coming from you.

Bam - I did a search, apparently treadmill marathons aren't real popular.

Julie - No, just 0% inline the whole time. Going into it I thought if I wanted to bail out I could always put it on negative incline and cheat but I never had too.

Kam - People don't run next to me, I must stink.

Bec - At mile 25 I actually started crying a bit and thought "I hope no one sees me, cause they would think I was really crazy" But yes, that is exactly what I thought when I got done. "I just ran a marathon and no one here even knows."

From Burt on Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 12:17:40 from 68.14.209.26

Apparently this guy holds the world record for treadmill marathons: http://athlinks.com/racer/41201281

Maybe you've heard of him.

From Rob on Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 12:41:45 from 204.15.86.95

I'll be darned.
