Back to the Lifetime treadmill today, running on roads must have taken all my speed away, either that or all this travel has zapped my energy.  Had a really hard time getting it all going this morning.  Eventually was able to get up to marathon pace for the last 2 miles of the run.

I finished Tyler Hamiltons book on the plane home yesterday, I was actually really into it and had a hard time putting it down.  I used to think that maybe there were some clean riders in the Tour De France during the "Lance Era" but after reading this book it only made sense that everyone had to be doping, that's the only way they could get away with it for so long.  The ICU didn't care, the Tour De France didn't care, the sponsors were making tons of money, the riders were making tons of money, Cycling was getting more world wide attention than ever, all the viewers were eating it all up.  The only thing Lance really did wrong 'in my opinion' was being a huge jerk, it's not like he started the whole doping problem, Spain didn't even have laws against doping, Germany's government probably sponsored Jan Ulrich's whole program, so really in European cycling you pretty much had to do it to compete. I was pretty surprised to find out they were doing transfusions.  I thought that was total 70's and that EPO had replaced blood doping.  The other thing that kind of struck me was that the doping really controlled their entire life, dodging testers, smuggling EPO and Blood Bags across borders in Dog Kennels, flying to Spain every 2 weeks for transfusions.  I kind of pictured it being, well less dramatic.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the book, it was really facinating to read what a glamorous life these guys were living, living in villas in little European villages, riding bikes around the alps everyday for a living, flying on private jets, and then for it all to come crashing down around them. Pretty amazing stuff.

It was definitely a tough book to put down once you got going with it.

Another thing I thought was interesting is that there was hardly any mention of the actual training they were doing (although I realize that wasn't really the point of the book). Obviously they were riding for hours and hours everyday and doing huge workouts, but its as if that didn't really even matter... because you got a much bigger boost from that blood bag than you ever would from 50 hours of training per week. It just made it seem like the drug use and crash dieting had more to do w/ race performance than actually getting in the saddle!

It talked about the training a little, but yeah no detail. That was weird though when asked if someone could even compete in the Tour without doping, and he brought up the year only the top guys were doping and the rest of the team were on Bread and Water or what ever term he used for that. He didn't even take into account that they were still doping during training, they weren't totally clean. So yeah that was strange that he made it sound like you only got the benefits during the race.

As uninterested as I thought I was on this topic this all sounds incredibly interesting and intriguing. I am bored out of my mind right now without school so I will have to read it.

Glad to see you back to the treadmill routine. :) It was like 90 degrees outside this morning Rob common!

I guess I need to stalk Carina on one of her morning runs to find out where she goes. Our neighborhood seriously has no street lights and I think running in darkness is way more boring than a treadmill with big TV's that show the same news over and over and over.

Welcome home!! And I'm sure you'd find my morning runs quite boring, the saving grace is running with someone to talk to. And I obviously prefer the road to the treadmill so as long as there is someone else there I don't care where we run. I usually just run back and forth on TM BLVD. Yeah, told you it's BORING!

I'm so irritated with the doping issue I've tuned it out. Makes me mad!!

That's what a doper would say Carina. Yep, I suspected you all along.
