Nice little 10 mile Jet Lag shaker after dropping Zach off at school this morning.  We got back from Barcelona yesterday afternoon, I really struggled staying awake last night, I went to bed at 8:00, woke up a few times in the night but for the most part slept pretty good.  I'm actually pretty good at recovering from Jet Lag.  The trick is to never sleep more than 5 hours a night anyway :)

I think my body is telling me it's ready for some structure in training again. I've pretty much just floated through this entire year either recovering from injury or not wanting to get injured again.  But I am able to run 10 - 12 miles a day pretty easily, sub 7:00 pace is starting to feel sustainable again, and I haven't really felt pain anywhere for a couple of months now.  This isn't a real great time of year to start training for anything, cause there isn't really anything, so maybe I'll just try and throw in some intervals here and there, try to get my weight back down and then kick it hard come January 1st. to get ready for Boston.  This is the part I really struggle with, I've really enjoyed the second 1/2 of this year, just relaxing, no pressure but I think I'm ready to see what I can do with all my newly aquired experience and wisdom.

Yeah Boston is a long ways off, so you don't want to be doing too many marathon-paced tempo runs and longer runs quite yet, b/c you'll likely be fried by March.

I think you're on the right track w/ throwing in some shorter intervals here and there - fartlek runs, hilly efforts, work on leg turnover, etc - those kinds of workouts will do a lot of good for your neuromuscular coordination and running form... and then when you start the "real" marathon training, running fast won't be such an immediate shock to the systems.

Perfect answer thanks. I was hoping someone smarter then me would respond and help me know what to do. I'll just try and keep my mileage around 60-70 mpw the rest of the year and start with a good base.

I've told this to a couple guys, but I started my buildup to Boston in mid-January, and was probably already hitting peak shape by mid to late March. So its exciting to get going early, but sometimes you can end up reaching your max a little bit too early if you do that.

Getting a good base where you mix in some occasional faster runs and hills to get you strong is probably the best thing from now until Christmas. Get strong, become unbreakable... and then you can do an injury-free buildup towards Boston.
